Ministerial Screening: It's Abnormal For Senate & Presidency To Have A Cordial Relationship – Majeed Dahiru

Amid the ongoing uproar that has trailed the screening of ministerial nominees sent to the 10th National Assembly by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, veteran journalist, and public affairs analyst, Dr. Majeed Dahiru has insisted that cordiality being witnessed between the Senate and the Executive is an abnormality that ought not to happen in the first place.

Speaking during an interview on Africa Independent Television’s ‘Kaakaki’ program on Tuesday, August 8, Dahiru, who is also a columnist for The Premium Times, argued that under normal circumstances, the Legislature ought to maintain its independence from the Executive at all times, even in matters involving screening of ministerial nominees sent to it by the President.

Going further, the veteran journalist lamented that the President appears to be having a heavy influence on the current crop of lawmakers at the Red and Green Chambers of the National Assembly.

He said; “The Parliament must regain its respect by simply becoming honorable and distinguished in its dealings. But unfortunately, that does not seem to be the case as we speak, because the Executive has been able to extend its influence to the National Assembly, and they have a very cordial relationship.

This is something that shouldn’t happen in a presidential system of government. I have said it severally that the idea of a cordial relationship between the Parliament and the Executive is abnormal. They are not supposed to have any cordial relationship because they are supposed to check and balance the activities of one another.”
