Why Corruption Persists In Nigeria – Speaker Of House Of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas

Abbas Tajudeen, Speaker of the House of Representatives, has revealed why it has become harder to combat corruption in Nigeria. According to The PUNCH, the Speaker stated this on Tuesday at an event hosted by the Independent Corrupt Practises and Other Related Offences Commission on Policy Dialogue on Corruption, Social Norms, and Behavioural Change in Abuja.

The high amount of corruption within the corridors of power, according to the congressman, has substantially hindered the country’s capacity to attain its full potential. He stated that this is due to the fact that various elements such as behaviours, norms, attitudes, expectations, inadequate governance institutions, and a lack of transparency have all contributed significantly to the perpetuation of corruption in Nigeria.

Abass said: “Despite this recognition, certain corrupting behaviours, norms, attitudes, and expectations persist within our society, thereby enabling and perpetuating acts of corruption.” “Various factors have fueled corruption in Nigeria, including weak governance structures, a lack of transparency and accountability, poverty, and cultural acceptance of corrupt practises.

“While we have laws, policies, and institutions in place to combat corruption, it is my considered opinion that corruption persists due to prevalent societal attitudes towards wealth, fame, power, and success, regardless of how they are obtained. “Tackling corruption through behavioural and social norms is akin to cutting off the root of an evil tree rather than trimming its branches.” After all, prevention is preferable to cure.
