When The Coup Broke Out, Bazoum Locked Himself In A Room & Made Calls To Western Powers- Dr. Maho

Dr. Austin Maho raised concerns about President Bazoum’s reaction to the coup, contending that a leader’s priority in a democratic context should be to engage with the electorate who placed their faith in his leadership, rather than immediately turning to foreign powers for intervention.

Dr. Austin Maho, a public affairs analyst, made a claim that when the coup erupted in Niger, President Mohamed Bazoum retreated to seclusion and initiated communications with Western nations. Maho brought forward this assertion during an interactive session on AIT .

In his remarks on the program, Maho emphasized that, as a democratically chosen leader, President Bazoum’s foremost course of action upon the onset of the coup should have been to address the citizens who had elected him to office.

Maho posed a thought-provoking question, stating, “Upon the outbreak of the coup in Niger, what was President Mohamed Bazoum’s immediate response? He isolated himself and initiated discussions with Western powers. In a democratic nation like Niger, where the populace entrusted him with their votes, his initial step should have been to reach out to the very people who bestowed him with authority. Why the inclination towards seeking assistance from Western nations?”
