When Bazoum Was To Be Inaugurated, There Was An Attempted Coup Around That Time—Gen Ishola Williams

The former Chief of Army tions, Training and Plans, Major General Ishola Williams (retired), was quoted as saying that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must take care not to become entangled in the current crisis in the Niger Republic, which was beyond a coup, and he urged the President to focus more on Nigerians and mediate diplomatically in Niger rather than using force. This information was reported by the Punch paper online this morning.

Additionally, he mentioned that a coup attempt occurred around the time of Mohamed Bazoum’s inauguration as the democratically elected former president of the Niger Republic, which the former president of the country successfully put an end to.

This indicates that the military, with the backing of politicians, did not want the current president to lead the Niger Republic. Why ? The Nigeriens themselves can provide an explanation, but I don’t know.

He may be from an incredibly marginalised ethnic community in the Niger Republic, according to some.

It’s a messy scenario, according to Williams, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu shouldn’t be worrying about it. It is incumbent upon President Tinubu to think things through before acting.

He said, Even if he storms Niger, the issue of human rights would then arise because the military are unable to simply kill the junta. There are numerous international treaties that forbid it.

However, The former Army commander also encouraged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ECOWAS Community to mediate subtly with the junta in his final remarks, because, Even more than the Niger Republic, Nigeria will suffer if they are forced to submit.
