What prompted Tinubu to remove all the service chiefs leaving DG of DSS?- Igho Akeregha

Igho Akeregha, a member of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, recently raised a crucial question regarding President Tinubu’s decision to dismiss all the service chiefs while retaining the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Akeregha posed this query during an interview on AIT’s Kakaaki program. The discussion took place in the context of the Senate’s investigation into oil subsidy issues during the Buhari administration, particularly concerning the staggering sum of 9.3 trillion naira spent within a span of 30 months.

Expressing his concern, Akeregha pointed out that in previous instances, such as the 6th to 9th parliamentary sessions, probing was often initiated with high expectations, only for any momentum gained to eventually dissipate. He expressed his hope that the ongoing probe would be comprehensive and thorough, unlike previous attempts.

Regarding the 9.3 trillion naira expenditure by the Buhari administration, Akeregha emphasized that it represented a significant portion of the country’s national revenue. He questioned the status of Nigeria’s treasury when Buhari handed it over to Tinubu. Akeregha specifically inquired about the whereabouts of the funds and how they were withdrawn from the country’s coffers, which led him to raise the issue of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Governor, Emefiele.

Akeregha conducted an investigation into the matter and discovered that the idea to redesign the naira, for which Emefiele is now being blamed, originated from the former chairmen of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). These individuals approached President Buhari with the proposal, and Emefiele’s involvement came later, as redesigning the currency required the participation of the CBN governor.

“Who are those that moved redesign of naira that everybody is now blaming Emefiele, my investigation found out that former EFCC chairman and ICPC chair, were two individuals that muted this idea and went to Buhari to tell him there is a need to redesign the naira. Emefiele was only brought in midway because you can not redesign naira without the CBN governor. Why did Tinubu remove all the service chiefs and left the DG of the DSS”

In light of these circumstances, Akeregha questioned why all the service chiefs were removed by Tinubu while the Director General of the DSS was retained. The highlighted the detention of Emefiele and sought clarification on this matter.
