A woman by the name of Adwoa Mercy from Akuakrom in Effiduase in an interview gives account on what happened after an overspeeding truck ran into their house six years ago. According to Mercy, She travelled to Accra seven years ago in search of work. One day, she received a call from her family telling her that a truck had ran into their house in the middle of the night but her son, brother and parents were severely injured.
The woman claims she took a car and came to Kumasi that night. Luckily, none of them died, but the victims were hospitalized for two months before her son and brother was discharged. The woman also said she took out a loan before she could pay for their hospital bills. When they appeared in court, they called the driver, who said he had given Ghc1,500 to their family head named Kwaku Agyei, but he said nothing about it.
They received Ghc 1,000 at the court to pay off part of the loan they took, but also ensured that the victims would be given insurance claim. Kwaku Agyei took the money from them and promised her that he would make sure to arrange insurance claim for them. They thought Kwaku was willing to help them after the lawyer came to take some pictures of the children and the building.
But he took the insurance claim and spent it without giving them any of the money to them to get further treatment for the victims. The woman stated that her son’s leg has been deformed after this incident occurred and they need to go for a surgery but they have not received any money for pay for that surgery. She confronted Kwaku Agyei for the lawyer’s contact number in order to ask for the insurance but he fled without revealing anything to them.
What he did made all the family members to suspects him of spending the insurance claim. According to the woman’s brother, Frank Osei who is also a victim, the incident happened one Saturday night in in 2016, while they were sleeping, the truck will loaded with goods ran into their house in the middle of the night, All his family members thought he is dead but he regained consciousness on the way to the hospital. The young man said one of his eyes is blind and needed further treatment, but Kwaku Agyei used up all his insurance money he got without helping them.
