We Strongly Support ECOWAS Efforts to Restore Democracy in Niger – France

The nation news reported that french Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Catherine Colonna, has affirmed France’s unwavering support for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in its bid to restore democracy in Niger after the recent coup d’état. The declaration came during her meeting with Niger Republic’s Prime Minister, Ouhoumoudou Mahamadou, at Quai d’Orsay, France.

Accompanied by France’s ambassador to Niger, Aichatou Boulama, Colonna expressed France’s firm backing of ECOWAS’s endeavors to quell the coup attempt. ECOWAS had given the coup leaders a seven-day ultimatum to relinquish power, which is set to expire on Sunday, August 6.

In a resolute tone, Colonna called on the perpetrators of the coup to release President Bazoum and all members of his government. She urged an immediate return to constitutional and democratic governance in Niger.

The coup occurred on July 25, when a group of soldiers led by Abdourahmane Tiani, former head of President Mohamed Bazoum’s presidential guard, seized power, declaring Tiani as the new head of state. ECOWAS swiftly condemned the coup, demanding the prompt restoration of constitutional order and threatening military intervention if the coup leaders do not step down.
