The FIFA World Cup is undoubtedly the most prestigious tournament in world football and we are about to witness the 22nd edition of the competition later this month. However, in the past and for different reasons, the following countries were banned from taking part in the tournament;

1- Germany – 1950 FIFA World Cup

In 1942 and 1946, the prestigious tournament was cancelled as a result of world war II, one that Germany played a major role. When the competition returned again in 1950, Germany were banned from taking part as punishment for their role in the global conflict.

2- Japan – 1950 FIFA World Cup

Like Germany, Japan were equally prevented from taking part in the 1950 FIFA tournament due to their involvement in the second world war.

3- South Africa – 1961-1992

Before becoming the first African country to host the World Cup, for more than 30 years (1961-1992), South Africa were expelled from taking part in any FIFA competition following their introduction of racist policies in Sports in 1956. They got reinstated in 1992.

4- Mexico – 1990 World Cup

As punishment for fielding four players that were above the age limit in the qualifying round of the world junior tournament, Mexico were not allowed to take part in Italy 1990 World Cup competition.

5- Chile – 1994 World Cup

For using a hidden blade in his glove to injure himself, but pretended to be hurt by a flare thrown by a fan during a clash with Brazil in 1989, Chile goalkeeper Roberto Rojas was banned from playing football for life, while his country were banned from playing in the 1994 World Cup tournament.

6- Myanmar – 2006 World Cup

Southeast Asian side Myanmar pulled out of a 2002 World Cup qualifying game that was scheduled to be played in Iran. To this, they were fined £20,000 by FIFA and then prevented from competing in the 2006 edition of the World Cup held in Germany.

7- Russia – 2022 FIFA World Cup

Following their invasion of neighbouring country Ukraine earlier this year, Russia were globally condemned and sanctioned by several international bodies. They were kicked out of the 2022 FIFA World cup play-offs where they were due to play Poland. As it stands, Russia are not returning to any FIFA related competition anytime soon.
