A former Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority, Vincent Maduka has said that the basic qualification for admission into broadcasting should be a university degree.

Maduka, who is one of the members of the the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters (SNB) inducted on Tuesday, stated this on Wednesday.

“Today, a university degree is not a terribly difficult thing to obtain and I think it should be the basic qualification for any new person.

“Those who acquired the skills through doing jobs, what we call on the job trainees will be required in my view to have done so at certain prescribed levels for so many years,” Maduka said.

He said in order for one to be a distinctive broadcast professional, he or she needs to have certain recognised skills and recognised means that somebody has examined and found suitable for communication and authority.

The former NTA DG also said that he would only call someone a broadcaster when that person can communicate and do so with authority which means the listener goes away with some new knowledge.

He added that for someone to be taken seriously as a broadcaster, he or she must be seen as an authority in the sense that the information the person is person is one that the audience can always take to the bank.

The induction into the SNB which was held in the amphitheatre at Channels Television Global Headquarters, had veterans in the profession including Maduka, Shyngle Wigwe, and inductees from across broadcast platforms in attendance.

In a keynote speech at the induction, the Chairman, Channels Media Group, Dr. John Momoh, OON, painted a picture of the changing media landscape in the light of digital transformation, and challenged players in the industry to adapt.
