Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state, has slammed his Nasarawa state’s counterpart, Abdullahi Sule, following the latter’s comment on the direct mode of primaries imposed on political parties.
The duo, who are members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) under Progressive Governors’ Forum have reportedly been unable to take a common stand on direct primaries.
The meeting between the 22 APC governors reportedly degenerated into a shouting match between Sule and Bello when the issue came up for discussion, The Punch reports.
Governor Sule, one of the biggest advocates of power returning to the south was the most vocal, while others who preferred indirect primaries were led by Bello.
A source from the meeting speaking under anonymity said trouble started during the meeting on Sunday, November 21,when Governor Sule, who spoke in favour of the direct primaries, used words which his Kogi state counterpart felt were offensive.
Abubakar Bagudu, the chairman of the PGF and Kebbi state governor, had to intervene to restore peace when a war of words ensued.
Meanwhile, Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have indicated that President Muhammadu Buhari will determine when the party’ s National Convention will hold.
The Nation reports that the governors under the auspices of Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) made this known on Sunday night, November 21, in Abuja after it held a crucial meeting behind closed doors.
Almost all twenty 20 APC governors attended the meeting which was held at the Kebbi State Governors Lodge Asokoro, Abuja at about 9: 20 pm.
A source at the governors’ meeting revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari would be given the honor of fixing the date for the convention as the leader of the party as many things are to be considered.
Governor Abubakar Bagudu, the chairman of the forum noted that that the forum will seek an appointment with President Buhari to discuss upcoming convention.
Governor Bagudu maintained that the date for the national convention was beyond the governors as he noted that the forum was just one organ of the party.
The Kebbi state governor further revealed that the governors took a position to meet with President Buhari whom he noted could give direction for when and how the national convention could be conducted.
