Tribunal Sacks Delta South Senator

According to Punch papers, Senator Thomas Onowakpo who is a lawmaker representing Delta South has been sacked on Wednesday by the Senatorial Election Tribunal sitting in Asaba, the capital of Delta State.

Mr. Michael Diden who is a candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had approached the tribunal with his petition, asking that the senator be disqualified after he was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),

According to him, INEC did not follow the Electoral Act before declaring the APC senator the winner of the election.

While ruling on the matter on Wednesday 6/9/2023, Justice Catherine Ogunsola, the tribunal Chairman ordered that the certificate of return given to Onowakpo be withdrawn and also ruled that INEC conduct a supplementary election with 90 days in Warri South LGA of the state.

Reacting to the ruling, INEC counsel, Clark Ekpebe said they would study the judgement and that they have option of Appealing it. According to him, they (INEC) have 60 days in the 90 days given.

He said, “The judgment has been given and we will go home and study the judgment. We have been asked to withdraw his certificate of return and conduct a supplementary election within 90 days”
