Tribunal: I would have changed my lawyers if I were these clients- Liborous Oshoma

Liborous Oshoma, a lawyer and political analyst, has expressed his opinion following the recent ruling of the presidential election petition tribunal, which upheld President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 presidential election. Oshoma suggested that if he were the clients, Peter Obi (the presidential candidate of the Labour Party) and Atiku Abubakar (the presidential candidate of the PDP), he would consider changing their legal representation.

He based his recommendation on the notion that elections often carry significant emotional sentiments, and people tend to believe that senior advocates would thoroughly handle their cases. However, Oshoma raised concerns about the actual preparation of these cases, noting that some senior advocates may rely heavily on their legal teams to prepare the documents and arguments. He suggested that in some instances, lawyers may be pressed for time, leading to hasty preparation of legal documents.

When asked if he believed the cases presented by the Labour Party and the PDP were not well-prepared, Oshoma indicated that he did have reservations about the quality of preparation, stating that he would consider changing lawyers if he were in their position.

He said, “Because there is so much sentiments attached to elections, and we believe that once it is a senior advocate, they would do a thorough job. In most cases, some of these senior advocates with due respect to them don’t even read these things. The boys in the office will prepare them, because also they are time bound, they are working against time. So let us quickly put something in and then when we get to the tribunal, we begin to test the law. I told somebody yesterday that if I were these clients, I would change my lawyers.”
