My Deputy Planned Coupe Against Me over House Speakership—Obaseki

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, yesterday, alleged that his deputy, Philip Shaibu, is desperate to become the next governor of the state and would explore every possible means to achieve his ambition including ousting him.

Obaseki said this during a meeting with elders and leaders from Etsako West, East, and Central Local Councils of the state in Jattu, Etsako West Local Council, as part of the campaigns for the September 2, 2023, council election. The governor said: “My deputy governor has become so desperate to take over and he is ready to do anything including carrying out a coup to ensure he kicks me out to become the Governor of Edo State.”

Obaseki, who expressed shock and disappointment over the recent actions of his deputy, added: “What struck me was his action after the proclamation of the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA) and election of its officers. He went to Abuja and came back that day. I am the Chief Security Officer of the state, I get any information I need, but keep quiet and use the information quietly.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reassured Nigerians on Friday that no stone would be left unturned in his administration’s efforts to stimulate the economy and make it work for the good of all Nigerians.

The President stated this at a meeting with the Board of Trustees of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Professionals Forum led by former Bauchi State Governor, Malam Isa Yuguda in Abuja. “This economy must recover for the good and greatest number of Nigerians, and we are seriously committed to seeing through a change for the better,” he said.

To steadily ensure growth and enhanced public enlightenment on policy outcomes, Tinubu said every effort across sectors would be documented and periodically reviewed for performance verification and public presentation. “So far, we have taken some baby steps and pushed some aggressive positions,” the President told the APC professionals, who had earlier pledged their support for his reforms.

Mbang spoke his mind to power, say, Obasanjo, Eno

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo; presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi; Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, and former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel, on Friday paid tribute to the late Prelate of the Methodist Church, Nigeria, Sunday Mbang, who was laid to rest in his home town in Eket on Friday.

Speaking during the funeral service held at the Methodist Church Nigeria, Cathedral Eket, Akwa Ibom State, Obasanjo lauded the late Prelate for his frankness in speaking his mind to power.

He credited the ecumenical center built during his tenure at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, to the late Prelate and CAN President, whose “purposefulness and consistency compelled him to lead a fundraising for the construction of the national Christian Worship Centre and the only cathedral with a revolving altar.” Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Eno, in his remarks, described the late prelate as an embodiment of Christian virtues, an icon of national unity, love, morality, and tolerance.

Eight killed as 150-year-old mosque collapses in Zaria

At least eight worshipers were killed and 25 others sustained injuries as a section of the 150-year-old Zaria Central Mosque collapsed on Friday during a prayer session.

The incident, it was learned, occurred at about 4 pm while the worshippers were praying. One of the survivors, Mallam Shehu Nagari, said the incident happened when they were in the second Sujud of Asr prayer.

According to him, the affected portion of the mosque suddenly collapsed on those sitting directly under it. Nagari said all he knew was that the affected worshippers were covered by rubble because the section was built with mud over 150 years ago. As of the time of filing this report, Nagari said he couldn’t ascertain the actual number of victims involved in the incident.
