President Bola Tinubu yesterday told the new ministers that the hopes and aspirations of 200 million fellow Nigerians rested on their daily actions and that he would not condone poor performance from any of them.

At the maiden federal executive council meeting he presided over at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the president urged the ministers to look beyond their titles and offices and stay focused on the day-to-day task of their individual and collective contributions to the transformation of the economy for the betterment of Nigerians.

The council considered the “Roadmap for the economy” presented by the minister of finance and coordinating minister for the economy, Olawale Edun.

In a statement by presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu said he will relentlessly provide the focused leadership required to stop failure in its tracks so that sustainable progress can be achieved.

The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, has come under fire from the national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje.

Ganduje in a viral video on Monday claimed Kwankwaso supported the contentious demolition of buildings in Kano.Ganduje spoke in Hausa to some of his loyalists and party supporters from Kano State who paid a courtesy visit to the secretariat.

In the two-minute, 28-second video, Ganduje stated that President Bola Tinubu was smart enough to see through Kwankwaso’s desperation to become the next Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

He added that the random demolition of buildings approved by his administration was the only way he and his political godson (Kano governor, Abba Yusuf) could express their frustration under the guise of sanitising Kano’s master plan.

The main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has raised concern over the prevailing hardship in the country, saying that Nigeria is fast grinding to a halt under President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

PDP in a statement by Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary of the party on Monday in Abuja laments that Nigeria is at the edge of the precipice under the APC which lacks the acceptability and followership of citizens; a situation that has created an atmosphere and feeling of absence of governance in the country.

The party also accused the present administration of neglecting the situation and instead angling for war in Niger, while in the last two months, “over 150 million Nigerians can no longer afford their daily meals with families now going to bed on empty stomachs.”

Ologunagba said: “Our Party is alarmed that there is a serious disconnection between the government and the citizens arising from the ill-planned and hasty implementation of policies that have brought excruciating hardship, horrifying insecurity, and a general sense of apprehension that is already threatening the peace, unity and corporate existence of our nation.

97% of Nigerians Not Insured–NAICOM

The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), has revealed that only three percent of Nigerians have insurance and 97 per cent do not have as they are undecided or not properly sensitised on the gains therein.

To put it in perspective, the current population of Nigeria is estimated to be 200 million. Ninety-seven percent of that figure means about 197 million of the population are not insured.

NAICOM’s Assistant Director, Corporate Strategy and Special Duties, Dr. Usman Jankara, made the disclosure in a paper he delivered at the recently-held journalists’ seminar in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, titled: “Insurance sector and the Nigerian Economy: Impact, Challenges and the new Frontiers”.

According to him, the number of those insured is a paltry three million. He said: “Concerning the number of those insured, it is put at three million. As at last year when the figure was taken, Nigeria is assumed to be 200 million.

“From 2015 till date, when you look at gross premium income of the industry, we were at N282 billion in 2015, and today it is N736 billion, representing average growth of 15 per cent.”

Jankara also put forward that, “That is not to say the industry couldn’t have done better, but to point to the fact that things are not as bad as they were today. There has been no economy that has grown 15 per cent over a 10-year period. None of the sub-sectors have done that.
