Troops of the Economic Community of West African States have said they are ready to participate in a standby force that could intervene in the Republic of Niger.

After the coupists seized power from President Mohamed Bazoum, ECOWAS issued a 7-day ultimatum to the military to restore the president or risk sanctions, including possible military action.

According to Al Jazeera, at a meeting in Ghana’s capital, Accra, on Thursday, the defence chiefs said they prepared to reinstate the democratic order in Niger.

Vanguard earlier reported that the ECOWAS defence chiefs began their meeting in Ghana on Thursday.

The Accra meeting of top army commanders on Thursday and Friday came after fresh violence in Niger, with jihadists killing at least 17 soldiers in an ambush, the defence ministry said.

Twenty more soldiers were wounded, six seriously, in the heaviest losses since the July 26 coup, when the presidential guard ousted Bazoum and detained him and his family.

Niger currently has more than 5,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), the deputy governor, Mr Yakubu Garba, said in Abuja on Thursday.

He told the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr Mustapha Ahmed, whom he visited that banditry and flooding contributed to the rising figure.

We have about 5,000 IDPs to 6,000 IDPs and we are still counting, but God willing we are doing everything humanly possible to ensure the situation is curtailed.

“The essence of this visit to NEMA is to acquaint the agency with some emergency situations ravaging Niger in the past six years to seven years.

“We have been ravaged by insecurity and floods have worsened the situation. I am here to brief NEMA so that we can collaborate to ameliorate the situation,’’ he said.

NNPCL’s $3b buffer to strengthen naira, stabilize exchange rate

The Federal Government pulled off a major strategic liquidity buffer with the provision of a standby $3 billion in advance royalties and taxes by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.

The NNPCL yesterday signed a conclusive agreement with the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) for an emergency $3 billion crude oil repayment loan, which enables NNPCL to provide the Nigerian government with upfront payments of royalties and taxes while the national oil company defrays the loan from its normal crude oil production activities.

The NNPCL will provide some immediate disbursements and subsequent disbursements will be in tranches based on the specific needs and requirements of the government.

The naira appreciated by 2.0 per cent to N759.86 per dollar at the Investors & Exporters (I & E) window.

The sense of security cut down the speculative parallel market, with the naira gaining some N100 to close at about N840 per dollar.
