Tribunal: Adebayo advises Obi, Atiku to prepare for 2027

As Nigerians alongside the presidential candidates of the People’s Democratic Party PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and the Labour Party (LP), Mr Peter Obi, await the judgment of the Presidential Elections Tribunal Tribunal (PEPT), the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the February 25 presidential election, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has advised the duo of Atiku and Obi as well as other opposition party members to move on with their lives and start preparing for the 2027 presidential elections.

Adebayo, who handed down the advice on X (@Pres_Adebayo) over the weekend, wanted the petitioners, and indeed, Nigerians to move on, and start preparations for the next general elections in 2027 because, according to him, the petitions were the easiest to dispense by the Tribunal judges since the return of democracy in 1999

He noted that the petitions lacked merit and were poorly presented.

He said: “This year’s election petitions are the easiest to dispense with since 1999. No need for any judicial acrobatics. They fall within clear jurisprudence and well established precedents. Obi/Labour vs Tinubu/INEC will be dismissed in limine; ditto for Atiku/PDP vs Tinubu/INEC. These petitions lack merit and are poorly presented, abysmally unproved and comically argued. The APM’s half-hearted petition is a pre-election mongrel with no pedigree in electoral litigation. The judges are not to blame. All opposition elements should prepare for 2027 elections.”

2023 Poll: We’ve learned lessons — Yakubu

The National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has said lessons have been learned from the 2023 general elections and that there would be an improvement in the forthcoming circle elections in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa states.

He added that the commission is satisfied with the feedback it got during the 2023 post-election review organized by the commission.

Speaking during the just concluded three-day review of the 2023 elections in Lagos, the INEC boss disclosed that most of the issues raised and recommendations made to improve the Nation’s elections would be tested in the coming elections in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa.

“We promised Nigerians that we were going to hold the election review meeting and conclude it within one month. We started on the 4th of July, and today is the 4th of August. The response has been overwhelming. Remember, we started with the state-level consultation with the RECs, we had an engagement with the transport unions, we then met with the State collation of the presidential election in Abuja, and then we had engagements with political parties and civil organizations, among others. So overall, we are encouraged by the response of stakeholders across the board and the quality of the contributions they have made.

Asked about the challenges that popped up during the review, he said, The number of challenges that came up, technology for voter accreditation, and result management, have been some of the issues raised, and recommendations made.

“The issue of electoral logistics, so that elections can start promptly, also includes the production and collection of Permanent voter Cards, PVCs, among others. We are harvesting all the issues and all the recommendations, and those that require administrative actions by the commission would be dealt with, but those that require amendment to the existing laws, be it the electoral act of 2022 or the constitution, we will harvest and approach the National Assembly for consideration. “

Atiku Suffers Setback In Bid To Subpoena Chicago State University Over Tinubu

A Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois County in the United States has dismissed the lawsuit filed by the PDP candidate, former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, to get access to President Bola Tinubu’s confidential educational records at Chicago State University.

The former vice president had filed the suit seeking to subpoena the university without due process.

According to the Circuit Court papers made available to our correspondent at the weekend, Justice Patrick J. Heneghan dismissed the case without prejudice.

In the judgment dated July 31st, 2023, the judge held that the “Petitioner’s subpoena in this case is withdrawn, and thus Chicago State University will not be deposed pursuant to the subpoena in this case.”

Tinubu In Dilemma As Senate Shoots Down Request To Invade Niger

As the deadline handed to the military junta in the Republic of Niger to return power to the democratically elected government ends today, chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is at a crossroads.

The Nigerian leader has reached an important but uncertain stage where he must either proceed with a military onslaught to quell the coup d’etat in Niger or heed to calls from his home country to adopt diplomatic and political approach instead.

Nigerians, including the federal legislature, state governors and opposition parties, have insisted that Tinubu should jettison the idea of going into war with coupists in Niger.

The Nigerian Senate yesterday rejected the option of military operations in the Niger Republic, calling on the ECOWAS parliament and other leaders to condemn the coup.

According to the Red Chamber, the Niger political impasse should be addressed politically rather than deploying military action.
