Terrorists getting bolder under Zamfara gov, says APC.

According to Punch news, The Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has expressed concern over the manner Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration is handling security issues in the state.

The opposition party, in a statement on Wednesday by its Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Idris, flayed the governor over what it described as the resurgence of killings and terror attacks in the state capital, Gusau.

“Just last Monday morning, the bandits had the effrontery to move through farms to attack a police station in Bungudu, killing a policeman, just as they simultaneously attacked Kwatar village, killing scores as reported by many media outlets.

“Even the state House of Assembly expressed worries over the development. It is as if there is no government in the state going by the disdainful way the bandits are having a field day in their killing spree.

“A few weeks ago some policemen were killed close to Bungudu and early last week some innocent citizens were reportedly killed at Boko village in the Zurmi Local Government Area.

“The same thing in Mada, Wonaka, Ruwan Bore in the Gusau LGA. In Bukkuyum and Anka, the wave is blowing all over the state and the PDP-led government under Dauda Lawal is doing nothing but lamentation, which is a sign of failure on the side of the government.”

The APC accused the governor of misplacing his priorities, saying instead of appointing a special adviser on security “who will be supervising and coordinating security matters on his behalf,” he appointed “an SA on finance and other social issues, neglecting the security of life and properties of the citizens.”

Tackle Bayelsa ocean surge, Diri begs FG.

According to Punch news, The Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, says coastal communities in his state are in danger of being submerged by the Atlantic Ocean and called for Federal Government’s assistance on the matter.

Diri raised the alarm on Wednesday when he visited Odioama community in the Brass Local Government Area to assess the level of devastation from ocean encroachment.

The governor, who addressed the Odioama council of chiefs, elders, youths and women at the community town hall, said he chose to personally come rather than send a delegate, so he could see things for himself.

He assured the community that the state government would embark on a 1.5km shore protection project in order to check the ocean surge that had submerged about 250 buildings in the last 10 years.

Diri said the government would commence the shoreline project while awaiting Federal Government’s collaboration.

He, however, noted that it was beyond the scope of the state to address such challenges in Odioama, Koluama, Sangana, Agge and other communities facing similar threats.

Joshua: It’ll be silly to underrate Helenius.

According to Punch news, Anthony Joshua has acknowledged that he will need to be on his “A game” in order to see off the challenge of Robert Helenius.

The two-time heavyweight world champion had been scheduled to face Dillian Whyte in a rematch of their December 2015 fight before his opponent failed a drug test.

Matchroom Sport have moved quickly to find a replacement in Helenius, who was confirmed as the opponent on Tuesday after only making a return to the ring last weekend after a 10-month absence.

With Helenius having been knocked out in one round by Deontay Wilder in October and having previously lost a wide points decision to Whyte, Joshua is naturally regarded as the heavy favourite to prevail at the O2 Arena in London.

However, the Finn has 32 wins from 36 outings on his record, his most notable coming against Adam Kownacki on two occasions when the Polish fighter was being pushed towards world title contention by US promoters.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Joshua admitted that he cannot afford to overlook Helenius, particularly having experience of losing to late stand-in Andy Ruiz when he made his United States debut in June 2019.

According to Punch news, The Commandant General, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ahmed Audi, on Wednesday, said no fewer than 100 illegal refineries were destroyed and 200 suspects arrested in the last two years.

This was as the CG urged the agency’s personnel to redouble their efforts in tackling oil theft and pipeline vandalism.

Audi spoke at the second CG’s conference in Abuja.

Speaking on the efforts made by the corps, the CG said, “Over 100 illegal refineries destroyed and over 200 suspects arrested in two years.”

He reminded all personnel of the challenge ahead and the need to effectively tackle emerging security threats.

He stated, “We also need to intensify our efforts in the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure, tackle the challenge of oil theft and pipeline vandalism, ensure protection of farmers and farmland to guarantee food security, protect facilities in the power, telecoms and transportation sector with an emphasis on rail infrastructure, among others.
