Army officers have appeared on national television in Gabon on Wednesday to announce they have taken over power in the West African country, BBC reports.

They said they were annulling the results of Saturday’s election, in which President Ali Bongo was declared the winner.

The soldiers who introduced themselves as members of the CTRI (The Committee of Transition and Restoration of Institutions) said, “We have decided to defend peace by putting an end to the regime in power.”

The electoral commission said Bongo’s main challenger, Albert Ondo Ossa, had come in second place with 30.77%. Bongo’s team have rejected Ondo Ossa’s allegations of electoral irregularities.

His overthrow would end his family’s 53-year hold on power in Gabon.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, has warned politicians not to blackmail or squeeze the judiciary and the society, or else they risk a revolt from young Nigerians.

In a video seen on social.media, the former President was seen speaking at an event, admonishing the audience on the importance of keeping the rule of law.

He said: “While we are doing the job that we are meant to do, let us not, because the judiciary is very conservative, try to blackmail them or squeeze them. Sometimes when we have political power, we become so blinded, especially when you are in the security forces. But society is changing, so we must admonish ourselves.

Civil society is becoming very active and certain things that we do and get away with, we may not get away with tomorrow. If we take laws into our hands and try to squeeze society, the young people will react. It happened when I was president, in a sister country, Burkina Faso.

Ambassador Lawrence Olufemi Obisakin, a former Nigerian Ambassador to the Benin Republic, in this interview with TAOFEEK LAWAL, speaks on the state of the nation, Nigeria foreign relations, the crisis in Niger Republic, his tenure in the francophone country, among other issues.

What will your comments be on the state of the nation?

Nigeria is a blessed nation. We are already 63 years old as a country. In 1963 we got our republic and that is 60 years ago which is significant in the life of a nation. Six is the figure of man according to the Bible. Nigeria has passed through many experiences and destiny has made us to become active by virtue of our location according to geography. In my other profession, we say that your location determines your allocation. We are located at a strategic point in Africa. We are born at a strategic time 1960 when most countries from the 1945 war which exposed the Europeans as not powerful as invincible as we thought they were. Nigeria has declared its stand in the international community through the statement made in October 1960 by our first and maybe the last Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa that Nigeria would remain non-aligned and we remained so until the collapse by the polar world in 1989/1990. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is now in charge and we have our elected representatives across board. What is uppermost in the mind of everyone as far as the state of the nation is concerned is survival.
