Former National Vice-Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Olabode George, has expressed displeasure over the role of the judiciary in electoral matters in Nigeria.

The elder statesman said it should not be rested on the judiciary to tell Nigerians who won a particular election.

According to him, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, should be able to stand its ground in making the right decision at all costs, even if it takes conducting multiple elections to arrive at the right results. The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, on Monday, announced its readiness to deliver judgment on the petitions filed in the aftermath of the 2023 presidential election.

Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP, and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, are challenging the victory of Bola Tinubu as declared by INEC on March 1, 2023.

George insisted that it is wrong that Nigerians should be waiting for a court to declare the winner of elections, warning the judiciary against taking away the rights of the people to determine election winners.

“The most contentious issue in Nigeria today is the judiciary, it is one of the pillars of government,” he said in a press briefing in Lagos on Monday.

FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo and 14th Emir of Kano, Sanusi lamido Sanusi, yesterday took a swipe at the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari over the bad shape of the economy, While Obasanjo declared that the former president’s government was allegedly a reckless spender, Sanusi lamented that Nigeria led a false life under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

In an interview with TheCable, the former President also spoke on the increasing coup in Africa

On the current bad shape of the economy, Obasanjo said: “Tinubu said the other day that it was unacceptable that he would spend 90% of his revenue to service debts. I wasn’t spending 90% when I went worldwide to get debt relief. Do you think that anybody would give you debt relief today?

“Buhari was spending money recklessly. I know Buhari didn’t understand economics. I put that in my book. But that he could also be so reckless, I didn’t know. Who would you go to today and ask for a favour? Tinubu says he has trimmed the number of people attending the United Nations General Assembly. Is that news? He will meet with Justin Trudeau, and he will meet with Emmanuel Macron. That will not solve any problem.”

When asked to comment on increasing era of military coups in Africa, Obasanjo described it as a new phenomenon in Africa.

He also insisted that the liberal democracy copied from Western countries will not work in Africa.

The Department of State Services, Nigeria’s secret police, has reportedly invited two brothers of the suspended chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa, for questioning.

DailyNigerian gathered that the secret police invited Bawa’s two brothers, Yazid Bawa (who also works at the EFCC) and Bashir Bawa (who works at the Nigerian Communications Commission) and seized a bulletproof car and a latest Mercedes-Benz allegedly found with them.

The DSS operatives also grilled the chief of staff to the embattled, suspended EFCC chairman, Hadiza Gamawa, alongside his legal adviser, U.U. Buhari.

The suspects were reportedly detained on August 25 and released a few days later. On August 31, the SSS operatives also arrested Mr Bawa’s personal assistants, Rufa’i Zaki, and Daniela Jimoh.

Recall that Bawa was suspended indefinitely from office by President Bola Tinubu on June 14.

The government had said his suspension was to allow for a thorough investigation into his conduct while in office, following “weighty allegations” of abuse of office against him.

Since then, Bawa has remained in the detention of the secret police without prosecution.

This has led to calls from eminent Nigerians, including lawyers and civil society organisations to press for his release or prosecution in a competent court of law.

SaharaReporters had reported how Abdulrasheed Bawa, who is still in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) was taken from the headquarters of the secret police to a private facility,

President Bola Tinubu, on Monday, expressed his support for new partnerships with global technology companies to ensure that data from public institutions are accurate and transparent in providing templates on which proper public sector planning and accounting can occur across sectors.

Speaking at a meeting in the State House with the Global Vice President of Oracle, Andres Garcia Arroyo, Mr Tinubu welcomed the company’s commitment to Nigeria’s civil service reform process and data management sector, even as he emphasised the need for greater knowledge transfer through the establishment of academies and training institutions in the country.

Aiming to promote the ease of doing business, digital innovation, effective identity management, efficient payroll administration and qualitative citizen-centred service delivery, the President cited Oracle’s proven success in the automation of the Lagos State payroll system during his tenure as the Lagos State Governor and lauded the positive impact of technological solutions in enhancing accountability and expediting timelines for service delivery without sacrificing quality in the process.

“I have tested Oracle, and it has worked for our success. In Lagos State, what we did in effective collaboration with you has been copied across the states of the Federation. We can only build our institutions with accurate data and cutting-edge data management capabilities that are reliable and effective. We can only rely upon our human resources for excellent service delivery to Nigerians if they are well-trained and ready to learn.
