Obaseki Free To Fix Federal Roads In Edo _Umahi

Works Minister Dave Umahi yesterday clarified that governors can rehabilitate federal roads in the states, following approval by the Federal Government.

He said the administration will prioritise maintenance of federal roads across the country.

Umahi said the Federal Government cannot prevent governors from road repairs, which can enhance the welfare of residents.

He spoke on the infrastructure battle of the Tinubu administration while inspecting ongoing road rehabilitations in Lagos.

He said the Federal Government will carry out resurfacing of the Third Mainland Bridge and pay more attention to concrete reinforcement of other roads in the country.

Umahi rejected what he described as blackmail by Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, who had complained about the poor state of federal roads in the Southsouth state.

FCTAs Legal Debt Hits N720bn–Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that there is a garnishee order to the tune of $8OO million (N720 billion) against the FCT Administration.

The minister threatened to take serious actions against highly placed persons whose actions were producing a negative impact on the FCT administration.

Wike, while drawing attention to the impact of the order on the economy, said the amount was enough to fund the budget of the FCTA over 10 years.

The minister who briefed, yesterday, on the state of the economy of the Administration, lamented that the situation is so bad that the economy could be described as dead.

We are coming out to tell the people that see what is on the ground, see what we have seen. I was telling the permanent secretary this morning, how can there be a garnishee order of $800m against the FCTA.

Tinubu Rallies World Leaders, ECOWAS Against Gabon Coup

President Bola Tinubu is rallying other heads of state in the African Union (AU) and world leaders against the takeover of power announced in Libreville, the Gabonese capital, yesterday by some military leaders.

The Presidency said Tinubu, who is the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is at the forefront of talks on steps to take on the political crisis in Gabon.

Presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, told reporters at the at the State House in, Abuja, that his boss had expressed deep concerns over recurring political crisis in different parts of Africa, describing the situation as a contagious.

The President, Ngelale said, also emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and utilising constitutional mechanisms to resolve electoral disputes.

Early yesterday, a group of soldiers appeared on Gabonese state television to announce the nullification of the election results and the dissolution of all republic institutions.

Tinubu, World Leaders, UN, AU, EU Reject Gabon Junta

Yesterday’s coup in Central African country Gabon drew anger from world leaders and international organisations.

They asked the junta to return to their barracks and restore democratic order in the thinly-populated oil-rich country.

The coup, the sixth on the African continent in six years, came after the one in Niger Republic, Nigeria’s Northern neighbour.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is still battling to get the soldiers to respect constitutional authority and quit power.

In Libreville, mutinous soldiers announced the take-over of political power.

They put President Ali Bongo Ondimba under house arrest, hours after being declared winner in an election held on Saturday that would have extended his family’s 55-year reign.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu began rallying world leaders has news of the coup filtered in. He spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and some ECOWAS leaders in his capacity as the chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government.
