Niger Coup: ECOWAS to meet again Thursday

ECOWAS Chair and Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, has convened another Extraordinary Summit of the Authority to discuss the political situation in Niger.

The Summit will be held in Abuja, on Thursday, and is expected to decide whether or not it is willing and ready to use force to return Niger to constitutional democracy.

According to an ECOWAS memo, the leaders will be considering and discussing the political situation and recent developments in Niger.

This will be the second ECOWAS meeting to discuss the Niger coup.

At the end of its first meeting, over a week ago, ECOWAS condemned the coup in Niger and imposed sanctions on the land-locked country.

Tinubu meets Senate President Akpabio

President Bola Tinubu and the Senate President Godswill Akpabio, are currently in a meeting at the State House, Abuja.

Akpabio arrived the Villa at 2.25p.m., shortly after the Senate adjourned for a closed-door session, occasioned by the rowdy session over the screening of Festus Keyamo (SAN), one of the President’s ministerial nominees.

Keyamo was ushered in by the Senate Sergeant at arms for his screening and perhaps confirmation.

After presenting his curriculum vitae, a member of the Senate, Darlington Nwokocha, raised a Point of Order, where he quoted a section of the Constitution that has to do with oversight function of the Red Chamber

He informed the Senate that Keyamo as a Minister of State for Labour and Employment refused to honour invitation from the Senate to explain the execution of the 1,000 jobs for each of the 774 local government areas of the country.

Senators move motion for suspension of Keyamo’s ministerial screening

The senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District, Darlington Nwokocha, on Monday, moved a motion for the suspension of the ministerial screening of the former Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo.

After Nwokocha moved the motion, his colleague from Abia-South Senatorial District, Enyinnaya Abaribe, seconded it, leading to a rowdy session at the red chamber.

Nwokocha had accused Keyamo who was a minister under the administration of the immediate past President, Muhammadu Buhari of disrespecting the 9th National Assembly and accusing the last parliament of being corrupt.

The lawmaker said during the Buhari administration, Keyamo was invited to explain the Special Public Works programme but he did not honour the invitation.

Lagos PR Conference to Address Employment Creation

The Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), has announced that the tenth Lagos Public Relations Stakeholders Conference will address Employment Creation and Nation Building.

The August gathering, which will be held in Lagos, is expected to have in attendance some distinguished guest speakers and capture highlights of previous editions of the highly celebrated conference.

Speaking on the conference, the Chairman, Lagos NIPR, Mrs. Comfort Obot Nwankwo, explained that the theme for this landmark edition, Stakeholders Conversations on Employment Creation and Nation Building, will discuss possible solutions to the increasing rate of unemployment and related issues in the country.

According to the conference coordinator and CEO, Addefort Limited, Mr Olabamiji Adeleye, added that, the need for government and institutions to ensure that we reduce the proportion of unemployment, tackling child labour, accelerating decent work and economic growth by 2030 based on the United Nations’ SDGs cannot be over emphasized.
