Nasarawa Assembly mourns as boat crash claims 12 lives in Lafia.

According to Punch news, The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has commiserated with the state government and Lafia Local Government Area over the death of 12 people in a boat accident at a river, Kogi Kungra Kamfani, in Arikiya, Lafia LGA of the state.

Speaker of the House, Ibrahim Abdullahi, gave the condolence message during an emergency sitting in Lafia on Thursday.

While condoling with the bereaved families over the death of their loved ones, he said, “It is very sad that we lost 12 people, comprising men and women in a boat mishap in Arikiya, Lafia LGA.

“19 people were on board, 12 died and seven were rescued. Lafia LGA and our dear state have been thrown into mourning over this sad incident.”

The state assembly urged the families, Lafia LGA and the state government to bear the irreparable loss.

“On behalf of myself, Honourable members and the staff of the assembly, we condole with the bereaved families, Lafia LGA and the state government over their deaths in the boat mishap.

Building collapse: Tinubu, Wike meet behind closed doors.

According to Punch news, President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday, met behind closed doors at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The meeting came on the heels of the building collapse which occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The agenda of the meeting was not made public but it may not be unconnected with the building collapse in Abuja on Wednesday in which about two persons were feared dead and 37 persons wounded.

Tinubu orders resolution of disagreements with UAE on Emirate Airlines, visa issuance.

According to Punch news, President Bola Tinubu on Thursday called for an immediate resolution to the disagreements between Nigeria and United Arab Emirates which has affected emirate airlines and issuance of visas to Nigeria.

Tinubu also said African countries have a better chance of overcoming economic and security challenges by looking inward for solutions and walking the talk on all of its pledges and agreements.

President Tinubu stated this while receiving Letters of Credence from three envoys at the State House: Ambassador of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Mr. Awall Wagris Mohammed; Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, Mrs. Miriam Morales Palmero, and Ambassador of United Arab Emirate, Salem Saeed Al-Shamsi.

In a side meeting with the Ambassador of Ethiopia, the President assured the envoy that Nigeria will continue to strengthen its ties with African countries in the areas of trade, security, and economic growth.

“Africans need to work for the progress of Africa. We should be able to resolve our internal problems, collectively. It requires a great commitment, but we must do that. No one can understand our people better than we do. Home-grown solutions are better for all of us, and the remedies will last longer,” he implored.

Mohammed congratulated the President for the historic decisions he has taken in the country, and the impact of the policies on the continent, assuring of his dedication to improve relations between Nigeria and Ethiopia.

PICTORIAL: Nigerian Army destroy illegal refinery in Delta.

According to Punch news, The Nigerian Army, on Thursday, August 24, said its men have destroyed a massive illegal refinery in Delta State.

The disclosure was made by the Director, Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen, Onyema Nwachukwu, and posted on the army’s handle on X (formerly Twitter),

The director mentioned that the troops of 6 Division, Nigerian Army, destroyed 8 active Ovens used for illegal refining of stolen crude oil, 14 storage reservoirs containing stolen crude oil estimated at 200,000 litres and 90,000 litres.

The statement read, “On 23 August 2023, troops conducting anti-oil theft operations, responding to actionable intelligence swooped on an illegal oil refinery site in the general area of Ogbokoko and Atu in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State. During the operations, troops destroyed 8 active Ovens used for illegal refining of stolen crude oil, 14 storage reservoirs containing stolen crude oil estimated at 200,000 litres and 90,000 litres of locally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).”

He said an investigation is ongoing to apprehend the absconded criminals.
