INEC closes its case in Atiku’s petition challenging Tinubu’s election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Monday, closed its case after calling a witness in Atiku Abubakar’s petition contesting the election of President Bola Tinubu on 25 February.

Atiku of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is urging the Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja to set aside Mr Tinubu’s victory on account of gross non-compliance with Nigeria’s electoral laws in the conduct of the presidential poll.

INEC on 1 March declared Mr Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) election winner.

Mr Tinubu garnered 8,794,726 votes to beat Atiku, who came second in the race with 6,984,520 votes.

At the resumed proceedings on Monday, INEC’s lawyer, Abubakar Mahmoud, called the first witness, Lawrence Bayode, an assistant director in charge of INEC’s ICT department.

Tinubu meets NSA, service chiefs at State House

President Bola Tinubu is meeting the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and service chiefs at the State House, Abuja.

They include the Chief of Defence Staff, Maj. Gen. C.G Musa; Chief of Army Staff, Maj. Gen. T. A Lagbaja; Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral E. A Ogalla; Chief of Air Staff, AVM H.B. Abubakar and the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

The meeting which began at 03:00 pm local time is Tinubu’s first known in-person engagement with the security helmsmen since their appointment on June 19.

Kidnapped oil workers regain freedom.

The eight employees of MRS Oil Nigeria Plc, kidnapped last week in Lagos have regained freedom, The Nation has learnt.

The victims were released on Sunday night at the Sangotedo area of Lagos State.It was however unclear if ransom was paid for their freedom.

The oil workers were abducted around 6pm on Monday while on a private boat from Lagos Island to Lekki. Their abductors were said to have whisked them into their boat, leaving behind the oil workers’ boat with their personal belongings.

Spokesman for the Lagos Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the release of the oil workers to The Nation on Monday morning.

Asked if any arrest was made, Hundeyin answered in the negative, declining further comments on the issue.

Tinubu Urged Not To Appoint Corrupt Persons As Ministers

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been urged not to appoint corrupt individuals into his cabinet.

This was contained in a statement co-signed by the Nigerian Youth Congress (NYC) Vice President, South West, Gbenga Ogunsola; the South West Caucus Leader, Tosin Adesuyi; and Secretary, Lagos chapter, Ibrahim Adeoye.

The statement reads in part: “As part of the ways to usher in a radical development into the economy as promised by the ruling APC, the NYC appeals to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to appoint political merchants whose stock in trade is corrupt enrichment at the expense of the Nigerian nation.”

They also appealed to the All Progressives Congress (APC) Senate caucus to elect the Senator representing Ekiti Central, Opeyemi Bamidele, as the Senate leader, describing him as a ranking senator with cognate experience and emotional balancing to hold such a central position.
