Aformer Director-General of the Labour Party (LP)/Peter Obi-Datti presidential campaign council, Doyin Okupe, has expressed his support for the President Bola Tinubu-led Economic Community of West African Countries’ proposed military intervention in Niger Republic against the military junta who took over power in the country.

Okupe on Friday on his Twitter handle used the hastag #WeStandWithTinubuOnNiger while responding to the political situation in Niger Republic.

He noted that irrespective of who the president was, Nigerians and political leaders must unite in defence of the country.

According to Okupe, President Tinubu is fighting for the enthronement of democracy in West Africa, and it is a commendable act.

He said, “I did not ask that Nigeria should go to war. I condemn the military leadership in Niger; they disrespected the Nigerian President, and demeaned our country by breaking diplomatic relationship with us; despite the fact that we initiated a peace move by sending a high powered delegation consisting of a highly globally respected former Head of State.

“They had the audacity to rebuff our peace negotiators and went ahead to break diplomatic relations with Nigeria! Who are these unknown elements? I have no apology for this position. I have always spoken my mind on all matters of national interest. And freedom of speech allows me so to do – Fact. I am too old to change that just to please people or friends.

“That was why I stood out boldly to support Obi against the run of play and against all my friends and political associates in the South-West. Obi never solicited for my support, neither did he lobby me. I did not ask for a kobo and I received none.

Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has commended the decisions taken by the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) so far regarding the recent coup in Niger, but warned against the proposed plan to adopt military action to restore democracy in the country. Atiku, in a tweet, on Friday, suggested that diplomatic options be strengthened rather than military action, hoping that only such diplomatic measures could guarantee peaceful return of democracy in the troubled country.

He said: “The military intervention in the Republic of Niger has created tension across the West Africa sub-region, and it is a development that has caused international attention to that neighbouring country of ours.

“The coup is even more worrisome because the number of states that have witnessed military intervention in the last three years in the sub-region is increasing.

“Of course, the world expects Nigeria to take up leadership in ensuring that the crisis of political leadership in the Republic of Niger is not just curtailed but also ensuring the restoration of democratic governance in that country.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has described the emergence of a former Kano Governor Abdulahi Ganduje, as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as putting a round peg in a round hole.

He also congratulated Ganduje and Senator Ajibola Basiru on their emergence as National Chairman and National Secretary of the APC respectively.

A statement from the Media Office of the President of the Senate, quoted him as saying, “we are very satisfied with the emergence of His Excellency, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, as our National Chairman. He ticks all the boxes and he is indeed, a round peg in a round hole. He has all it takes to take the party to another level.

“With Dr Ganduje as the party chairman, the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu, is right on course. As a strong and committed party man, he knows how to galvanize all interests within the party into a united entity for the future success of the party.”
