Former Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Mr Festus Keyamo (SAN), on Monday, hailed President Bola Tinubu for nominating him, noting that he had lost hope of becoming a minister after the first batch of the ministerial nominees was submitted.

He said he had already packed his luggage and was about going on vacation with his family before he heard of his appointment.

He disclosed this during his screening at the Senate, presided over by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

Keyamo said he had practiced law for 30 years, saying that being nominated was just by the grace of God and special benevolence of President Bola Tinubu.

Lawmakers are in a rowdy session over the screening of a ministerial nominee, Festus Keyamo, SAN.

Keyamo, a former Minister of State for Labour and Employment under former President Muhammadu Buhari, appeared before the Senate to be screened and confirmed.

However, things didn’t go well as Darlington Nwokocha (LP Abia Central), moved a motion requesting the suspension of the screening of the nominee.

Nwokocha reminded Keyamo of how he insulted the lawmakers from both chambers during his tenure as a minister. The motion was thereafter seconded by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe. The lawmakers are currently in a closed-door session.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Public Accounts, Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to appoint a substantive Auditor General of the Federation in compliance with the Section 86 of the 1999 Constitution.

Wadada, in a letter to Tinubu, noted that the absence of the AuGF has left the government susceptible to potential mismanagement, lack of accountability and transparency.

The lawmaker expressed concern that the Office of the Auditor General for the Federation, which is the apex audit institution of the country, had been without a substantive Auditor General for the last 10 months.

He stressed that appointing a substantive Auditor General would strengthen the federal government’s commitment to fiscal responsibilities and safeguard public trust.

He pointed out that the Audit Reports of 2020, 2021 and 2022 are yet to be transmitted to the National Assembly in accordance with section 85 (2) of the 1999 Constitution as a result of the non-appointment of an Auditor General.
