The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of extorting Nigerians with the increased N617 pump price of petrol.

PDP said the price of fuel should not be more than N150 per litre, adding that the increased rate was a maladministration by Tinubu’s government that has shown extreme insensitivity and callousness towards Nigerians.

The Party cautions that the increase is worsening the already suffocating economic situation under the APC and has the capability of triggering a very serious crisis in the country if not abated.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan is set to leave for Cambodia on Wednesday for a dual event of observing the country’s general elections and participating in a democracy dialogue and international leadership conference.

Jonathan would be leading the African delegation to the scheduled July 23, 2023, general elections in Cambodia and will also serve as co-leader of a 100-member International delegation from 37 countries coordinated by the Universal Peace Federation (UPF).

Other co-leaders are former Heads of State from Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Guatemala.

A joint invitation from UPF and Asian Vision Institute (AVI), an independent think-tank based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, described Dr. Jonathan as one of the distinguished democrats and observers whose presence helped build public confidence in the honesty and transparency of electoral processes.

The Enugu Division of the Court of Appeal has dismissed the suit filed by the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 general election in Enugu State, Chief Uche Nnaji, challenging the victory of Governor Peter Mbah of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)

The decision of the three-man panel of the appellate court was delivered by Justice J.O.K. Oyewole on Tuesday.

Nnaji whose petition was initially dismissed by Justice K.M. Akano-led Enugu State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal on June 20, 2023, approached the appellate court to seek redress.

It is recalled that he had contended that Mbah was not constitutionally qualified to vie for the office of the governor at the time of the election, having allegedly presented a forged certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Among others, the APC candidate, who polled a total of 14,575 against Dr. Peter Mbah’s 160,895 votes, to place a distant fourth in the election, equally averred that Governor Mbah was not duly elected by majority of lawful votes cast at the election.

Also joined as respondents were the candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Hon. Chijioke Edeoga, and that of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Mr. Frank Nweke Jr., whom, according to the appellant, were not qualified to contest the election, having allegedly run afoul of the asset declaration law.SNiger Assembly urges executive to re-introduce monthly sanitation in Minna

Members of the Niger State House of Assembly have called on the Executive arm of government to re-introduce the monthly sanitation exercise to forestall the outbreak of diseases and natural disasters like floods in the state.

The motion to that effect was raised by the member representing Chanchaga Constituency, Mohammed Abubakar on the floor of the house and was seconded by the member representing Gbako, Yahaya Abubakar.

Abubakar decried the number of refuse dumps littering Minna, the state capital and other major towns, arguing that if not tackled, could put the state and the residents under serious health hazards and environmental disaster.

The lawmaker insisted, “refuse can be seen littered all around Minna, the state capital and other major cities and this is not good. Unclean environments and flooding can trigger disease outbreaks such as Lassa fever, cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery, typhoid, and so on.”

“Section 5 subsection 1 of the Niger State Environmental Protection Agency (Amendment) Law 2011 provided for the Governor to declare any Saturday of the month as an Environmental Sanitation Day”.

Consequently, after deliberations, the lawmakers unanimously adopted and affirmed the motion.
