Amid intervention efforts to reverse the military coup that saw Niger president Mohamed Bazoum ousted two weeks ago, the President of Côte d’Ivoire, Alassane Ouattara, has affirmed that the conciliatory moves were an ECOWAS affair as opposed to a matter between Nigeria and Niger.

Ouattara stated this on Thursday on the sidelines of an extraordinary summit by the Economic Community of West African States in Abuja.

“ECOWAS cannot accept this. This is not a matter of Nigeria against Niger. Not at all,” he said.

“The decision that we have made today — and I hope that it will be implemented immediately — is a decision of ECOWAS.”

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, in a statement, said the United States was pleased with the determination of ECOWAS to explore all options for the peaceful resolution of the crisis.

Democracy is the best foundation for development, social cohesion, and stability in Niger. We stand with the Nigerien people in working toward these goals.

“We echo the ECOWAS condemnation of the illegal detention of President Mohamed Bazoum, his family, and members of the government, as well as the unacceptable conditions under which they are being held, and call for their immediate release. Like ECOWAS, the United States will hold the Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) accountable for the safety and security of President Bazoum, his family, and detained members of the government,” Blinken said.

Prostate Cancer Treatment Reason I ‘Went Quiet’ After Elections – Utomi

A leader in the Labour Party, Prof. Pat Utomi, on Friday, revealed his struggle with prostate cancer for which he received a diagnosis last year, saying this is the reason he appears to have gone quiet.

In a series of tweets, the 2011 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Mega Party (SDMP) said, “Prostate cancer is bringing death and misery to many men.”

He argued that if patients had been forewarned, the “misery containment” and chances of cure could be significantly enhanced, similar to breast cancer prevention efforts among women.

“When a biopsy showed I was positive last year I began treatment with a cancer Centre with a branch in Ikeja and VI,” Utomi said.

“I sometimes came from election campaigns to the Ikeja Centre near the Airport. The Doctors would try to smuggle me out from the back.”

Adamant Niger Republic junta got a stern warning yesterday from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS): reinstate President Mohammed Bazoum or face military action.

The sub-regional body put its standby force on red alert, a decision taken at its second successive extra-ordinary meeting in one week on last month’s coup in Niger.

The meeting came almost a week after the expiration of a one-week ultimatum to the junta to quit office and restore democratic rule.
