Election Petition Not Won On Social Media – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, says election petitions are not won on social media but decided by facts and evidences.

Wike, a Peoples Democratic Party chieftain, spoke exclusively when he featured on Channels Television’sPolitics Today programme on Thursday.

The former governor of Rivers State commended the Presidential Election Petitions Court for affirming the victory of President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 25, presidential poll.

Wike said he did not support his party, the PDP and its flag bearer, Atiku Abubakar at the Tribunal “because I believe their position was wrong; I believe in equity, I believe in fairness, I believe in justice.”

“I have always told people that election petition is not like any other case; it’s a special area; it is not by propaganda, it is not won on social media, it is presentation of evidence, facts.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says the “war” over the 2023 Presidential election is still on.

Speaking at a press conference organised by the party on Thursday, Atiku said he has asked his lawyers to proceed to the Supreme Court.

Atiku had challenged the victory of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in court, but the presidential election tribunal threw out his petition and upheld Tinubu’s election.

Ex-Kogi Deputy Governor Awoniyi dumps PDP

The crisis rocking the Kogi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took another dimension on Thursday, as a former deputy governor of the state, Abayomi Awoniyi, officially dumped the party “after 25 unbroken years of loyal and dedicated membership and service.”

Awoniyi, who served as deputy to former Governor Idris Wada, conveyed his resignation in a letter addressed to the chairman of PDP in Mopamuro Local Government Area of Kogi State, dated 31st August 2023.

Though he has not officially indicated his next line of action and did not give specific reasons for his exit from the party, his resignation might not be unconnected with his dissatisfaction with the last governorship primaries of the party, an exercise he termed a “farce.”

There are also strong indications that he will be joining the All Progressives Congress very soon.

Court upholds House of Reps election in Enugu

The National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Enugu on Thursday upheld the election of Hon. Dennis Agbo as the duly elected member representing Igbo-eze North/Udenu Federal Constituency in the National Assembly.

Ruling in a petition brought before it by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the February 25 House of Representatives contest, Obiageli Ajih, the panel led by Justice Nusirat I. Umar dismissed the petition for being incompetent and lacking in merit.

Hon. Ajih had asked tribunal to nullify the election of Agbo on the grounds of Irregularities and corruption, non compliance with the electoral law (omission of her party in form EC8a) and the respondent not being a member of the Labour Party at the time of the election.

But in a ruling read by Justice Legor T. Senewo, the tribunal held that the petitioner failed to prove case of irregularities and even their witness supported the respondent in their account.
