The presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in the last general election, Alhaji Atiku Abukakar, has described his counterpart, Mr Peter Obi as a respectable leader.

Atiku made the disclosure his verified Twitter handle, noting that Obi’s dedication to service and growth continues to inspire many people.

Recall that Obi was Atiku’s running mate during the 2019 presidential election.

However, while wishing Obi happy birthday, Atiku opined: “Peter Obi is a respected leader and distinguished former governor of Anambra state and presidential candidate of the Labour Party. Your dedication to service and growth continues to inspire. As you add another year today, I, on behalf of my family and team wish you many more years in good health and vitality”.

P/HARCOURT – The immediate past governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike’s description of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) as “a cash cow” has elicited condemnations from some quarters.

Wike had on Monday during the flag of 50.1km of the Port Harcourt ring road described the commission as a cash cow and urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reorganize the place for productivity.

Reacting to the statement, Comrade Joseph Ambakederimo, Chairman, Board of Trustees,

Community Development Committees of Niger Delta Oil and Gas Producing Areas (CDC) and Mr. Augustine Iyamu, Head of Secretariat, said the statement was unbecoming of a former governor and a Niger Delta son.

“The statement made by ex- Governor Wike is misplaced and can be referred to as careless talk from an individual who wants to use the bashing of the NDDC to score cheap political mileage and worm his way into the heart of President Bola Tinubu for political patronage.

Tinubu, Nigerians don’t want the N8,000 cash transfer offer, By Rotimi Fasan

IF there’s one thing Nigerians seem to be clear on about the proposed measure to ease the immediate harsh effect of the fuel subsidy removal, it is that they are not interested in the conditional cash transfer scheme. Under this plan, the Federal Government is to transfer N8,000 over a six months period to poor Nigerians or low income-earning households, the so called poorest of the poor.

It is a palliative measure that comes directly from the passage of the bill that amended the 2022 supplementary budget after the Federal Government had secured a World Bank loan of $800 million. It is from this loan that the government would source the N500 billion that will constitute the pool from which poor Nigerians would have their accounts directly credited with N8,000. This, it is expected, would help them tide over the worsening effect of the removal of the subsidy on fuel on May 29, 2023.

Peter Obi is not a god

Yes! There’s nothing they haven’t said of Peter Obi. They have charged that he is not a god. They have said he is no more than a political opportunist. They have ridiculed his promise to change Nigeria from consumer to producer. They pooh-poohed as unfounded the statistics the man churned out on successes abroad that could be replicated back home. But the traducers wouldn’t reckon with reality. The subject of their insistent lambasting never ascribed divinity to himself. He did not circle his head with sanctity’s hallo. In the league of politicians, he didn’t claim to be more human. He only asked for the chance to lift a comatose country.

Those who alternate between reading newspapers and staring into the skies understand that, like other humans, Peter Obi possesses a bag of foibles. All told, he sculpted in the granite of national consciousness an enduring self-definition. “I am a trader,” he often asserts, without the novelty ever wearing off. Well, here is a gem from the trader-politician: “Who among us would lose their car and, on discovering who made away with it, allow them to keep the vehicle because it was scrupulously maintained?”
