Tinubu Bars N’Delta Ex-agitators From Aso Rock

There are strong indications that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has barred all ex-Niger Delta militant leaders from visiting him in the presidential villa, Abuja.

Already, LEADERSHIP learned that requests for courtesy visits by notable militant leaders and ethnic militias from the oil-rich region to Tinubu in the villa have lately been disapproved by the presidency. It was gathered that the decision was taken in the aftermath of the visit to Tinubu by the leader of the defunct Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, (NDPVF), Alhaji Mujarhedeen Asari-Dokubo, on June 16 this year.

Asari-Dokubo, a die-hard and staunchest supporter of Tinubu, backed and supported the president in the run-up to the 2023 presidential election. It was gathered that Tinubu, in ordering the action, was disturbed by public utterances and actions of Asari-Dokubo in the aftermath of his visit to him days after he assumed the mantle of leadership of the country.

NLC threatens to strike if petrol price rises

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to embark on strike if there is a further increase in the pump price of petrol without the Federal Government addressing the consequences of the last two increases.

Labour said no notice would be given if its members woke up to a new pump price of petrol. President of NLC, Joe Ajaero said this yesterday during the African Alliance of trade unions executives meeting in Abuja. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL)has increased the pump price of petrol since the removal of the troll subsidy twice.

Nigerians buy petrol products at N617 per liter, depending on the part of the country. The protest was suspended following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu by labor. There had been reports of a further increase in the products by independent marketers, citing the fall in the value of the Naira to a dollar at N950 in the parallel market.

Army condemns misconduct as soldiers, LASTMA officials clash

The Nigerian Army said it would begin a campaign for traffic compliance amongst its officers as no fewer than five yet-to-be-identified soldiers attacked an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency on Monday.

A 31-second viral video showed the soldiers with scarves to conceal their identities, and at least two civilians, one of whom also masked his face, attacking one of the agency’s officials. While the LASTMA official kept screaming for leniency, one of the soldiers was seen kicking him with his boot.

Despite his plea for leniency, the soldiers and the civilians descended on him while the official, with a torn LASTMA uniform and rolling on the ground, was repeatedly kicked before the soldiers and the civilians fled the scene. Meanwhile, a separate 16-second video seen by our correspondent on Monday showed a LASTMA official dragging a soldier out of the front seat of a commercial bus and beating him with his stick.

Police clamp down on protesters demanding Kano Emir’s removal

The Kano State Police Command, on Monday, said it had declared a manhunt for some persons who chanted provocative slogans against the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, on Sunday.

The state Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Gumel, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Kano. Gumel said the affected persons caused public disturbance during the inauguration of Hasiya Bayero Paediatric Hospital, near the Emir’s palace on Sunday.

The protesters were said to have organized themselves disturbingly, chanting provocative slogans against the Emir who attended the event. They chanted slogans, like “new governor, new Emir,” insisting that Governor Abba Yusuf should remove the Emir and install a new one since it is a new government in power.
