Niger coup: I’m holding back ECOWAS from coming hard on junta leaders – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has said he’s been holding back other leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) from carrying out their collective threat on the military junta in Niger Republic.

According to the Nigerian President who played host to a delegation of Islamic scholars (Ulamas), on Thursday, they must expedite progress in their ongoing dialogue with the military junta so as not to incur the wrath of ECOWAS.

Recall that the Ulamas were previously engaged in discussions with the military junta to facilitate the restoration of constitutional democratic governance in Niger Republic.

Thursday’s delegation to the Villa was led by Sheikh Bala Lau, who gave a comprehensive briefing on the outcome of their interface with Niger junta to President Tinubu.

The briefing followed the Ulamas’ two most recent visits to Niger Republic.

According to the Islamic leaders, the military junta was open to deepening dialogue with ECOWAS as more steps are being taken to forestall armed conflict, with a more detailed acceptance of the ECOWAS position by Niger military council officials.

But responding to the delegation of Ulamas, against the backdrop of ethnic rumours peddled by domestic political figures inside and outside of the country, President Tinubu emphasised that he is at the forefront of a peaceful resolution of the crisis, even in the midst of more hawkish individuals urging swifter intervention.

“I am managing a very serious situation. If you take ECOWAS aside, other people will react, those who are outside of our control. I am the one holding those sides back. I am the one holding back ECOWAS,” he disclosed.

Abure not sacked, Apapa’s camp twisted Appeal Court judgement – LP

The Labour Party (LP) has dismissed claims that its party leadership, led by Julius Abure, has been sacked by the Appeal Court.

Instead, the LP said it was another devastating blow for the Lamidi Apapa-led faction as the Court of Appeal in Owerri dismissed the appeal filed by one Mr Basil Maduka, who it said is contending for the Labour Party governorship candidacy for Imo State.

The LP, therefore, called on members, supporters and the general public to distance themselves from what it described as “falling and compromised members of the party”, who it said have since been shoved out of the party.

The party in a statement issued on Thursday by the LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, claimed that Apapa’s camp had misinformed the public by twisting the judgement of the appellate court.

For peace in south-east’ — reps panel calls for Nnamdi Kanu’s unconditional release

A house of representatives ad hoc committee has called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Obinna Aguocha, chairman of the committee interfacing with security agencies to ensure criminal activities in Isuikwuato and Umunneochi LGAs of Abia state are nipped in the bud, spoke at a hearing on Thursday.

He said the release of the IPOB leader is necessary for peace to be restored in the south-east.

The IPOB leader has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since he was extradited from Kenya in June 2021.

In October 2022, the court of appeal in Abuja struck out the terrorism charge filed against Kanu by the federal government.

The appellate court held that Kanu’s extradition from Kenya to Nigeria to stand trial was illegal.

The federal government later filed an appeal before the supreme court, challenging the judgement — and subsequently filed an amended charge before a federal high court.

The government also filed to stay the execution in the appellate court and it was granted.

The supreme court heard the case in May but adjourned it to September 14.

US Plays Down BRICS Bloc Expansion

The United States on Thursday played down the admission of six new members to the BRICS bloc of developing nations, saying it would keep working with partners around the world.

At a summit in South Africa, the BRICS — which includes key US adversaries China and Russia — said it would admit new members including Iran, an arch-nemesis of the United States since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

“The United States reiterates its belief that countries may choose the partners and groupings with whom they will associate,” a State Department spokesperson said.

“We will continue to work with our partners and allies in bilateral, regional and multilateral fora to strengthen our shared prosperity and uphold global peace and security. ”

One closely watched player has been India, another BRICS member which has also been assiduously courted by the United States.
