President Bola Tinubu, accompanied by the National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu and the newly appointed service chiefs, convened a closed- door meeting at the State House in Abuja, Vanguard reports.

The meeting, held on Monday, was an urgent response to the deteriorating security situation in the country. It marked the President’ s first formal engagement with the NSA and the service chiefs since their appointment on June 19, 2023.

The high- level security meeting saw the participation of notable figures such as the Chief of Defence Staff, Maj. Gen. C. G Musa; the Chief of Army Staff, Maj. Gen T. A Lagbaja; the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral E. A Ogalla; and the Chief of Air Staff, AVM H. B Abubakar. Additionally, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, was also present to contribute to the discussion.

The urgency of the meeting can be attributed to the alarming security challenges that the nation currently faces. Nigeria has been plagued by terrorism, banditry, and armed gang activities for an extended period. Disturbingly, verifiable data from the period between May 2015 and May 2023 revealed that over 55, 000 Nigerians lost their lives to these heinous acts. The former administration of President Muhammadu Buhari faced intense criticism for failing to address these issues effectively.

The Nigerian populace eagerly awaits a swift resolution to the ongoing security challenges, with hopes of eradicating the activities of terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, and other criminal elements operating within the country’ s borders. The citizens, who have long suffered the consequences of insecurity, are desperate for tangible and sustainable solutions.

The closed- door nature of the meeting suggests a candid and thorough assessment of the security situation, allowing the attendees to deliberate freely and strategize effectively. Given the President’ s emphasis on security reform, it is likely that the meeting served as a platform for discussing comprehensive changes to the existing security doctrine and architecture. Such reforms would aim to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the nation’ s security apparatus, enabling it to effectively combat the current wave of criminal activities.
