Tinubu refuses idea of new scramble for Africa in inaugural speech at AU

According to the PM , President Bola Tinubu delivered a powerful address in Nairobi, Kenya, emphasizing Africa’s unity and strength. He strongly rejected the idea of a new scramble for Africa, emphasizing that the continent’s history of exploitation and pillaging should not be repeated.

Speaking at the Fifth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union and various regional bodies, Tinubu outlined strategies to strengthen the ECOWAS Standby Force, aiming to prevent coups and combat terrorism in the sub-region.

As Chairperson of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Tinubu highlighted the significant progress made by ECOWAS in trade, free movement of individuals, investment promotion, infrastructure development, and security.

He stressed the importance of inclusive growth, good governance, and leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) for a prosperous future.

Tinubu addressed the challenges faced by the sub-region, including terrorism and undemocratic changes in government. He emphasized the need for peace, security, and stability, as they are vital for the successful integration and prosperity of Africa.

Tinubu called for stronger efforts to combat these challenges, including enhancing the role of the ECOWAS Standby Force and providing support to security agencies in Burkina Faso and Mali.

On the trade front, Tinubu noted the achievements of the Free Trade Area and the ongoing efforts to establish the Customs Union and Common Market. However, he expressed concern about the low level of intra-community trade among member states and the dominance of the European Union as a trading partner.

Tinubu also highlighted ECOWAS’ commitment to regional infrastructure development, such as the Lagos-Abidjan Corridor Highway, which aims to promote economic activities and integration.

He provided updates on energy projects and interconnections within the region, emphasizing the importance of the West African Power Pool and the trade of electricity.

The President expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to attend the Mid-Year Meeting of the African Union and praised the AU’s efforts in enhancing collaboration between continental and regional bodies.

He thanked the Government and people of Kenya for their hospitality and the excellent facilities provided for the meeting.

President Tinubu’s address emphasized the need for Africa to overcome its challenges, strive for unity, and work towards a prosperous future. He underscored the importance of good governance, peace, security, and regional integration for the continent’s development.
