According to Vanguard, Yerima clarified that he does not advocate for indefinite negotiations with bandits, as arrests and eliminations have already taken place. However, he believes that inviting the bandits for dialogue is a crucial step. He cited the possibility of repentance and forgiveness, emphasizing that individuals who genuinely repent should be rehabilitated and reintegrated into society, with measures in place to prevent a recurrence of their criminal activities.

Yerima acknowledged the government’s authority and resources, along with the capacity of the military and security forces, to address the issue if dialogue fails. He expressed confidence in their ability to handle the matter effectively, emphasizing that dialogue is an essential part of governance.

It is worth noting that Yerima previously urged Tinubu to engage in dialogue with bandits, drawing a parallel to the dialogue that former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua had with Niger Delta militants in the past. Yerima suggested that if dialogue proves unsuccessful, the government should resort to the use of force.

Yerima’s advocacy for dialogue comes amidst a surge in indiscriminate killings and kidnappings for ransom across the country. He also acknowledged that while some bandits are foreigners, most them are Nigerians.

In the past, Yerima gained attention for introducing sharia law in Zamfara State 23 years ago. During his administration, severe punishments such as amputation and wrist cutting were carried out for crimes such as theft.
