They said we close our border & Niger also close its border; how did Sanusi get to Niamey?- Chuks Akuna

Chuks Akunna, Executive Director Authority newspaper, said Nigeria say we close its border against Niger and Niger also close its border, asking how did Sanusi Lamido Sanusi got to Niger. During an interview on AIT’s Kakaaki program, he addressed Sanusi Lamido Sanusi’s visit to Niger, where he engaged in discussions with the Niger military junta. 

Akunna expressed his surprise at the news of Sanusi’s meeting with the military junta, initially considering it a photoshopped image. However, as corroborating stories emerged, his curiosity grew. He pondered the paradox of both Nigeria and Niger having closed borders, preventing travel by air or road, yet Sanusi managed to reach Niamey. This situation led Akunna to question whether the border closures were selectively applied.

Furthermore, Akunna drew parallels to a similar incident the previous week, where former Nigerian head of state Abdusalami Abubakar and Sultan of Sokoto visited Niger and engaged with the military junta. The key concern, according to Akunna, is the ambiguity surrounding the junta’s interactions: are they engaging with a former head of state or a former Emir of Kano like Sanusi?
