‘There is room for dialogue’ — Bode George cautions ECOWAS against military action in Niger

According to Bode George, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, there is still room for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) leadership to engage in discussion to settle the political issue in the Niger Republic.

According to The Punch, George remarked on Arise TV on Tuesday in response to the ECOWAS’ proposed military intervention in the Francophone country.

The regional group has requested that the military junta reinstall ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.

Tinubu, the ECOWAS chairperson, had written to the national legislature about the organization’s intention to interfere in Niger as a last resort if the country’s military junta failed to shift ground.

George, who advised against employing military force in Niger, said there is still room for talks with the junta.

George, a nominal national vice chairman of the PDP, stated that invading Niger would be futile, noting that other West African countries under military control have joined forces with Nigerien troops in anticipation of an invasion.

The ECOWAS deadline for the coup plotters to reinstate Bazoum or face military intervention expired on Sunday.

The group has stated that it will meet on Thursday to decide how to move with the Niger Republic problem.
