"The Most Interesting Portfolios Of All Are The Portfolios Of Badaru And Matawale" – Mahdi Shehu

President Tinubu’s recent choice of Mohammed Badaru and Bello Matawalle as defense ministers has drawn criticism from Nigerian political analyst Mahdi Shehu. The selection shocked AShehu, who called it the “most insulting portfolio.”

In highlighting the roles of the 45 confirmed nominees for ministerial positions, President Bola Tinubu gave special attention to Badaru and Matawalle. Both individuals, who come from different backgrounds, have been appointed as defense ministers, namely as the minister of state for defense.

Shehu expressed worry that the nominations would prevent sensible judgment and action in crucial situations. He emphasized that they would be heavily dependent on military assistance, which might not be of their choosing, undermining their authority and ability to make decisions.

He said,

“The most interesting portfolios of all are the portfolios of my brothers, Badaru and Matawale, former governors of Zanfarawa State. Senior and junior defense ministers were assigned to them. Surprisingly, this is the most offensive portfolio.

They are not generals, security agents, or previous law enforcement officers. Baduri is an accountant, and Mattawale is a Zanfarawa state administrator. “When they arrive at the defense ministry, the first thing they will notice is that they will be sent military assistance (MAs) against their will.”
