Subsidy: ‘Tinubu Takes 2 Steps Forward, 10 Steps Backwards’ – Kachikwu Dumebi

Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dumebi Kachikwu, has said the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu did not start on a good note.

During an ARISE TV interview, the politician gave his take on the N8,000 palliative the government is planning to share to poor Nigerians to cushion the effects of subsidy removal.

Daily trust report that, He likened the president’s policy on subsidy removal to taking two steps forward and 10 steps backwards.

I don’t know how to fathom how a president who has spent his entire life pursuing the office can afford to behave in a way that suggests he lacks urgency in resolving issues, he added.

“I personally anticipated that the president would have to release his cabinet list within the first two weeks so that Nigerians could begin screening these individuals. I anticipated seeing and hearing a lot of policy declarations in areas that are urgent.

“We observed the end of petroleum subsidies. On that, he ran his campaign. Although I ran for office on that platform as well, I think Nigeria shouldn’t suffer as a result of a few people’s mistakes or the government’s incapacity to control subsidies.

“What we should have done was temporarily remove or suspend the subsidy while putting stronger and more effective processes in place to make sure that people don’t abuse the subsidy,” said the author.

Check out the financial transfer they are preparing to make as well. Our previous administration did that. We witnessed its demise. We witnessed its abuse. And I believed that the administration would have a far more effective strategy.

There are others who think that the cash transfer will boost the economy. But in the case of Nigeria, 8,000 naira will be completely ineffective. And I fail to comprehend how the president could have accepted that.

“A president’s advisors are only as good as him. Although I don’t know his advisors, I think they made a mistake. Tinubu moves two steps ahead before going ten steps back.
