If Atiku had supported Obi or any other South candidate, it will simply be a southern bout- VON DG

According to a news that was published by The Nation paper online this morning, it was reported that Mr. Osita Okechukwu, who serves as the Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), has expressed his understanding of the opposition parties’ disappointment as regarding the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) verdict yesterday.

Okechukwu, a foundational member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), shared his views during a conversation with journalists in Abuja, as he acknowledged that the main opposition party, the PDP, had a promising chance of making a comeback in the 2023 presidential election. He attributed the party’s defeat to what he called the political self-interest of their candidate, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, which led to division within the opposition.

He said, “Atiku dealt PDP a huge blow from which it might be difficult to recover. His failure to unite behind a Southern presidential candidate, such as his former running mate Peter Obi, fractured the PDP’s unity. If Atiku had supported Obi or any other Southern candidate, it will simply be a southern bout.”

As regarding claims made by the petitioners, Okechukwu dismissed allegations that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was unqualified to run, and cited irregularities in the election process, including the failure to electronically transmit results in real-time. He believed that these issues could have been resolved had Atiku adhered to the zoning convention.
