Subsidy: Instead of assuaging the pain Buhari's Govt caused us, Tinubu's Govt worsened it – Sikirulahi Ogundele

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Sikirulahi Ogundele, has shared his perspective on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s first 100 days in office, as reported by The Punch paper.

In his assessment, Ogundele expressed disappointment with Tinubu’s government, particularly citing the removal of fuel subsidy as a decision that has exacerbated the hardships faced by Nigerians. He compared Tinubu’s approach unfavourably to the perception of Yoruba people as welfarists. Ogundele also noted the significant increase in the cost of running generators due to power shortages, which has added to the financial burden on businesses and individuals.

In his words, “There is just no basis to compare the PDP government with what we are seeing under the APC government. The 100 days in office of President Bola Tinubu is undoubtedly a bundle of disappointment. Rather than helping to assuage the pain the (former President) Muhammadu Buhari government inflicted on Nigerians, the President has worsened it. An average Yoruba man is seen to be a welfarist but Tinubu has begged to differ, with this removal of fuel subsidy without any plan on ground to cushion the excruciating pain”.

He further said; “I now spend an average of N120,000 every day to run generators at my two hotels. Don’t forget that this same set of people were the ones who said subsidy was a scam; that there was nothing like subsidy when former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration wanted to remove it”

Ogundele referenced the previous stance of some political figures who had questioned the existence of fuel subsidy during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration. This stressed the change in position and policy decisions under the new administration. Ogundele’s comments, as reported by The Punch paper, have sparked various reactions from Nigerians on social media.
