Shehu Sani Reveals What National Assembly Should Do Before Approving President Tinubu’s N500bn Request

An influential socio-political activist, Shehu Sani, has asked the National Assembly to demand an item-by-item breakdown of the N500 billion Presidential request for palliatives.

Writing on his verified Twitter handle on Thursday, the former Kaduna Central Senator, urged the parliament to ask President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who is going to be in charge of the money and which agency of government will handle the funds.

Sani also asked the national assembly to inquire from the executive how the fund is going to be disbursed, saying that the questions are for transparency and to avoid the past fiasco in the Ministry of Humanitarian and Social Development.

He wrote: “Before the approval of the N500Billion Presidential request for the palliative, the National Assembly need to demand the item by item Breakdown of the figures; who is going to be in charge of the money; which agency of Government will handle the funds and how it’s going to be disbursed. This is for transparency and to avoid the past humanitarian ministry fiasco.”

Earlier, President Bola Tinubu has asked for the National Assembly’s approval to source for N500 billion palliative to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal

According to the President, the N500bn would be extracted from the 2022 supplementary appropriation act.

This was disclosed in a letter read on the floor of the plenary by the speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, on Wednesday.

President Tinubu explained that the request become necessary so that his administration can source for funds to provide needed palliatives to confront the challenges emanated from the removal of the fuel subsidy recently.

The president expressed optimism that the House of Representatives will immediately consider the request for approval.

He noted that the N500bn will be extracted from the 2022 appropriation act of N819.536 for palliative provisions for Nigerians.
