Shehu Sani Reacts Following Tinubu's Request For National Assembly To Approve 500B For Palliatives

Former senator for Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has expressed his opinion on President Bola Tinubu’s request for the National Assembly to approve N590 billion for palliative measures. President Tinubu sought the approval to enable the federal government to provide support and allete the impact of petrol subsidy removal on the Nigerian populace.

Taking to his verified Twitter page, Sani voiced his concerns regarding the matter. He stressed that before granting approval for the N500 billion presidential request designated for palliatives, the National Assembly should insist on receiving a detailed breakdown of the figures.

Shehu Sani emphasized the need to identify the individuals responsible for overseeing the funds and questioned which government agency would be entrusted with their management. He also sought clarification on how the funds would be utilized for the benefit of the people. With these inquiries, Sani aimed to promote transparency and prevent a recurrence of the past controversies surrounding the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs.

“Before the approval of the N500Billion Presidential request for the palliatives, the National Assembly needs to demand for the item by item Breakdown of the figures; who is going to be in charge of the money; which agency of Government will handle the funds and how it’s going to be disbursed. This is for transparency and avoiding the past humanitarian ministry fiasco.”

In a succinct tweet, Shehu Sani reiterated his stance, stating that the National Assembly should demand an itemized breakdown of the N500 billion requested for palliatives. He stressed the importance of identifying the individuals entrusted with managing the funds, determining the government agency responsible for their administration, and establishing the mechanisms for their distribution. These actions, according to Sani, were necessary to ensure transparency and prevent a repeat of the previous challenges faced by the humanitarian ministry.
