Niger coup: Tinubu has not ruled out military option — Presidency

The presidency has insisted that President Bola Tinubu has not ruled out military intervention in Niger Republic warning that religious and ethnic sentiment would not be tolerated in addressing the danger posed by truncating democratic rule in the West African country, Niger Republic.

President Tinubu who equally ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to make financial sanctions against individuals and entities related to the military junta in Niger.

Briefing State House correspondents, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale explained that no option has been taken off the table as the West African region bloc prepares for another summit on the Niger crisis.

He said, “…While no options have been taken off of the table of people as we do draw the attention of this audience to the upcoming loss, extraordinary Summit, which will be holding in Abuja on Thursday, August 10. It is therefore expected that at the extraordinary Summit, far-reaching decisions will be taken concerning the next steps of the regional bloc according to developments as they unfold.”

He further said, “I can also report that following the expiration of the deadline of the ultimatum and standing on the preexisting consensus position of financial sanctions meted out on the military junta in Niger Republic by the bloc of ECOWAS Heads of State, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered an additional slew of financial sanctions through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on entities and individuals related to or involved with the military junta in Niger Republic.”

Akpabio says money sent to senators to enjoy holiday

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has told the senators in the Upper Chamber that the clerk of the National Assembly will send some money into their various bank accounts to enable them to enjoy their holiday.

In the video which surfaced online on Wednesday, August 9, Akpabio made the statement before a motion of adjournment was moved at the end of the Senate’s ministerial screening.

He said, “In order to enable all of us to enjoy our holidays, a token has been sent to our various accounts by the clerk of the national assembly.”

Shortly after, the head of the nation’s upper chamber was alerted by some of his colleagues that the plenary session was live on television.

Senate committees: APC gets 48 chairmanship slots, PDP 18

The Senate President, GodsWill Akpabio, on Monday, unveiled the 74 Standing Committees of the 10th Senate.

Of the 74 Standing Committees, senators on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress were named chairmen of 48.

The major opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, got 18 chairmanship slots, while four slots ended in the hands of members of the Labour Party.

The Social Democratic Party got two chairmanship slots; the All Progressive Grand Alliance got one, while the Young People’s Party, also got one.

PDP raises publicity committee for Bayelsa, Imo, Kogi polls

Ahead of the November 11 governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo and Kogi states, the Peoples Democratic Party has constituted a special national media/publicity committee to sensitise the people to the party’s policies and programmes.

The 12-man committee, according to a press release by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Debo Ologunagba, was formed pursuant to Section 40 (1) (a), (b) and (c) of the PDP Constitution.

The committee is “to liaise with the various campaign councils and committees for the elections to ensure effective media and publicity actions for the victory of our party in the elections.”

The committee is chaired by Mr Ologunagba, while the secretary is Richard Ihediwa

Other members of the committee include Emmauel Ibeshi, Kola Ologbondiyan, Emmanuel Ogidi, Segun Sowunmi and Richard Akanmode.

Others are Don Evarada, Alfred Kemepado, Arthur Ugochukwu, Ezekwe Uche and Ibu Thomas, who is to act as technical/information and technology assistant to the committee.

The party charged the committee members to go the whole distance to ensure victory for the PDP and its candidates in the elections.
