Rigging yourself into power in an election is also a coup- Ibrahim Mai Sule

Former Nigerian Ambassador to Indonesia, Ibrahim Mai Sule, has claimed that a coup doesn’t only involve the military seizing power. During an interview with Arise TV news, he said that a president manipulating the electoral process to secure power can also be seen as a coup. He urged Ecowas leaders to address the critical matters focused on strengthening African democracy.

According to Sule, “We need to exercise caution when dealing with leaders who cling to power. A coup isn’t solely about the military taking control. It encompasses situations where individuals exceed the constitutional boundaries. If someone manipulates an election to secure their position, it’s tantamount to a coup. The main issue with these leaders is their belief that they’re always right while everyone else is wrong. We must scrutinize their actions. I’m concerned that their actions might lead us into an indirect conflict.”
