Respect Democracy, And Ensure Political Stability, Tinubu Admonishes Africa Leader

According to Vanguard, on Saturday in Nairobi, Kenya, President Bola Tinubu urged African leaders to respect democracy and the rule of law and ensure political stability in his statement at a high-level event hosted by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) on the sidelines Speaking at the African Union (AU) fifth biannual coordination meeting, the President appealed to African military institutions and states to recognize and respect the need for democratic renewal.

The Nigerian leader, who also chairs ECOWAS, the Heads of State and Government Authority, said coups on the continent should be halted, especially in the face of challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, insecurity, and climate change.

The President, in his statement delivered by Ambassador Adamu Ibrahim Lamuwa, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said it was unfortunate that West Africa, despite its numerous tools and mechanisms to promote democracy and good governance, is leading other regions to use unconstitutional means to change governments.

He warned that the ugly trend of the military drifting into the political arena poses threats to peace, security, and stability, and creates dangers of poverty, displacement, and humanitarian crises. In a statement by Mr.Dele Alake, the President’s special adviser on special assignments, communications, and strategy, Tinubu was quoted as saying, This ugly trend has only resulted in the peace, security, and stability of being threatened.

This ugly trend has also led to food shortages and escalated health challenges.

Therefore, we must take targeted action to address the root causes of unconstitutional changes and coups in Africa.

As a continent, we cannot make progress towards the goals and targets of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the AU Agenda 2063 for Africa we want.
