Reactions Trail As Gabon Military Takes Over Power From President Bongo

Army officers have appeared on national television in Gabon on Wednesday to announce they have taken over power in the West African country, Punch paper reports.

Soldiers identifying as members of the CTRI (Committee of Transition and Restoration of Institutions) have announced the nullification of the results from Saturday’s election, in which President Ali Bongo was announced as the victor.

They said, “We have decided to defend peace by putting an end to the regime in power.”

Following the recent presidential election in the West African country, the electoral commission reported that Albert Ondo Ossa, Bongo’s primary rival, secured the second position with 30.77%. Bongo’s group has dismissed Ondo Ossa’s claims of electoral irregularities.
