President Tinubu, ECOWAS Meet As Niger Coup Leaders Form New Government

On Thursday, a meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is due to be held in Abuja under the chairmanship of President Bola Tinubu to discuss the political instability in the Niger Republic.

The summit’s main focus is on alternative responses to the military coup that toppled President Mohamed Bazoum in Niger. This meeting will take place shortly after the coup leader in Niger announced the appointment of 21 people to the position of minister. Two weeks after overthrowing President Mohamed Bazoum in a coup, according to Punch , the coup leaders declared the establishment of the new government in a television broadcast on Wednesday night. The previous ECOWAS decision to threaten military involvement if the junta didn’t reestablish democracy in the country was remarkable.

Leaders of ECOWAS called for “Mr. Bazoum’s quick release and reinstatement as the rightful head of the Republic of Niger” days after the July 26 coup. “Only official activities of President Bazoum or his duly-mandated officials will be recognized by ECOWAS,” they adamantly declared.

All of the regional leaders denounced the coup and the wrongful detention of President Bazoum, his family, and government officials. They highlighted that the detained officials’ and their families’ safety is solely the coupists’ responsibility.

At the previous summit, representatives from Cape Verde, Liberia, Niger, and Sierra Leone were present along with the presidents of Benin, Cote d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Senegal, and Togo.
