"As long as ECOWAS allows fraudulent declaration of result, there would be coup" – George Weah

Liberian President George Weah, has voiced concerns about the potential for military coups in Africa, attributing them to the fraudulent declaration of election results and manipulation of justice. According to a Twitter user quoting the President, he emphasized the need for ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) to intervene and protect democratic institutions from political interference and threats.

President Weah called on African leaders to fight against injustices surrounding political institutions and prevent corrupt politicians from accessing elective office through election rigging, voter apathy, mass poverty, and vote buying during polls. He asserted that addressing these issues is crucial in curbing military interventions.

The context for his statements comes in light of ECOWAS imposing economic sanctions on Niger Republic following a successful coup that ousted President Mohammed Bazoum. The regional body demanded the coupists to reverse their actions within seven days, threatening military intervention otherwise.

The tweet reads: “The President of Liberia, George Weah on issues of Coup and military intervention by ECOWAS:

Hear him:

“As long as ECOWAS tolerates institutional coups that allow lifetime presidencies, and fraudulent declaration of election results, manipulation of judicial announcements, there will always be military coups. We cannot condemn military coups when we do not condemn those who carry out institutional coups.

“ECOWAS should work for the interest of our peoples.

“Notice to the Nigerian Judiciary.”

What are your thoughts on this?

Do you agree with President George Weah’s statement about the potential for more military coup if there are fraudulent declaration of election results?
