Wike Reveals Why He Did Not Support Peter Obi In The 2023 Presidential Election

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), recently shed light on his decision not to endorse Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the February 25th election.

During an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, September 7, 2023, the former governor of Rivers State explained that his choice to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu stemmed from his belief that Obi had slim chances of winning the election.

Wike said that being a younger candidate, a lot of people would have wanted Obi to win, but with the way the votes went, Obi did not stand a chance.

He emphasized that in Nigerian politics, factors like ethnicity and religion carry significant weight, not just competence. Wike expressed his realism, stating, “I knew he wouldn’t secure victory.”

Expanding on his perspective, he continued, “While many preferred a younger candidate, the election results demonstrated a shift in generational preferences. Young voters were fatigued, and they placed their hope in Obi.

However, “But unknown to them, that is not the reality of Nigerian politics. They didn’t take into cognizance that ethnicity is a factor. They didn’t take into cognizance that religion is a factor, not only competence; that is the reality of Nigerian politics.”
