The Labour Party (LP) has stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s offer to opposition governors, including thePeoples Democratic Party (PDP), LP and others, to nominate individuals for ministerial and board appointments, in an attempt to legitimize his stolen mandate is bound to fail.

DailyPost reports that the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State, disclosed at a meeting of the forum that Tinubu asked the governors to nominate competent persons to serve in the boards and parastatals of Federal Government agencies which were dissolved last month.

Reacting to the report on Thursday, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, stated that the LP, its members and Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, have their eyes on the ball and won’t be swayed by Tinubu’s offer.

“We are not unaware of the subtle moves by the APC and President Tinubu to break our ranks using all kinds of gimmicks to try to break our resolve to retrieve the mandate freely given to Peter Obi and his running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed on February 25, 2023.

“We will not be swayed or distracted from our goal which is to retrieve our stolen mandate that is why we are before the Tribunal and have provided the necessary documents and arguments to buttress our case.

“I can assure you that the majority of Nigerians are with us and have seen through all of the desperate attempts by the APC to legitimize what it is fully aware is a stolen mandate.”

The Chairman of the class of 1999 Governors, Lucky Igbinedion of Edo State, conveyed the President’s message after a closed-door meeting of the class of 1999 Governors, in the Council Chamber at the Aso Villa in Abuja.

Addressing State House correspondents, the former governor, who expressed the President’s dream to foster a better nation, asserted that the issue of subsidy is gone forever, expressing the belief that the situation will soon normalise.

The group’s chairman further underlined that all hands be on deck to foster a greater nation, particularly as the issues are beyond party politics.

The Abuja division of the Federal High Court has refused the request by the detained leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu to wear the Igbo traditional attire “isi agu” while in custody.

In his suit before the court, the Biafra agitator said preventing him from wearing his preferred attire is tantamount to an infringement on his fundamental human rights.

Kanu was renditioned to Nigeria from Kenya last June under questionable circumstances. Since his arrival, he has been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS), the secret police of Africa’s most populous nation.

But in his judgment on Thursday, Justice James Omotoso held that Kanu’s application lacked merit and consequently refused.

The court stated that the denial of wearing Igbo traditional attire does not amount to a violation of human rights as alleged by the applicant.

According to the court the IPOB leader has failed to prove his assertion to be granted the reliefs sought in his suit.

Justice Omotoso said there is nothing on record before the court to show that he was discriminated against or that other inmates enjoy any form of privileges or rights than the applicant.

“The case of the applicant is based on speculation without any concrete evidence, the applicant’s suit lack merit, same failed and consequently the suit is hereby refused.”

Nigerian lawmakers demand salary increase

Members of the House of Representatives are demanding an upward review of their salaries and allowances, following the removal of fuel subsidy and the current economic situation in the country, the Agency of Nigeria reports

NAN gathered that the demand was the outcome of a meeting the lawmakers had on 11 July after going into an executive session during plenary.

The complaints from members arising from salaries and allowances forced the House to go into executive session in order to douse tension.

The lawmakers had also demanded from the Speaker, Tajudeen Abass, the reason for the delay in the payment of their salaries and allowances, causing some of them to resort to loans.

However, one of the lawmakers who was at the meeting but craved anonymity because he was not permitted to speak on the outcome of the executive session, said they only spoke about salary increase and not delayed payment.
